Stories
Through Speed the Light, our missionaries are provided the tools they need to speed the gospel around the world. And they are grateful for the sacrifices students have made and continue to make so that people can hear the message of hope. If every student gave just $100 to STL each year, every missionary's vehicle and equipment needs would be met!
Here are just a few of the testimonies we've received from our missionaries and the students who have sacrificed:
Dominican Republic
Tue, 12 May 2009 - 1:36 PM CST
Tropical storm Noel took the Dominican Republic by surprise, leaving more than 87 people dead, 46 missing, and over 70,000 people as refugees whose homes were either washed away or flooded in the wake of the storm.
In the aftermath, we (along with our ministry team) have been purchasing basic food supplies in bulk and delivering the family-sized rations to devastated communities around the country. Thanks to emergency relief funds from AGWM and the generous donations from one of our supporting churches, we have been able to use our STL vehicle to personally distribute large food rations, clothing, and some beds to over 550 families. The national church, fellow missionaries, and local churches are also pitching in with intense relief efforts.
In Arenoso, the flood water line on the church building was just over the top of the pastor's and his wife's heads. When the waters came rushing and rose to eye level within seconds, they were afraid that drowning was imminent. The force of the current repeatedly impeded their attempts to swim out of the building to safety. A local evangelist steered his fishing boat to the church just in time to rescue the young pastor couple. To their horror, however, the brave evangelist was swept away by the current after the rescue and lost his own life.
The mountain roads into Ocoa and El Guineo were impassable for more than 10 days after the storm due to tremendous landslides. Just after the passage was opened, we traveled to these towns with relief supplies. Thanks to our STL vehicles, we were able to make it up the mountains. We experienced divine protection and intervention when, just minutes after we stopped to change a flat tire, the unstable hillside 50 feet in front of our vehicle collapsed, covering the roadway with several feet of mud and dirt. Fortunately, no one was injured!
The smiles on the faces of the families we helped could not have shown brighter that day.
Thank you, Speed the Light, for helping us provide hope to these many families.
